yes, of course you can have your own website!!, you can get it free of pay for it..
firstly before you make your own website, you should know, whuts content you will provide in the website? or you just want to make personal website.
For me, for personal space, myspace and friendster is quite good idea, here you can share your gallery, make friends and share things with your friends.
If you really want to have a website, then you need to register the domain which .com,.net,.org is paid domain or else get free webhosting like byethost.com,acidhost.com,275mb.com.
next you will need script to control your website content, if you want to make your own based website, you can make html or php script using dreamworks or frontpage.
I suggest you to use joomla,mambo,xoops,kaago to operate in your website, you can edit the content of your website and they provide you with a lot of attractive addon/modules if you want to upgrade your site.

freewebs is much easier to understand, and they are both free web sites..the only way you pay for them is if you want a better account
