Meaning would keeping the rooms warm be cheaper than keep warming up them after they have cooled down. having the boiler on and off every four hours say.

Get an optimising/programmable thermostat and this will take care of all your different time/temperature settings. EG Honeywell CM67

We have our central heating on only when it is really freezing outside. We start it off on 20 then move it down to 18 and it is perfect. Not too hot. I have been told that turning the switch on and off will cost you more money.
Closing your curtains helps a lot, i close our sitting-room curtains at about 3 in the afternoon, turn on the christmas lights then it is all warm and cosy in front of the computer answering some quetions:)

I have found that if you have it on a moderate temperature constantly (or on a timer) it is by far cheaper than setting the boiler up then turning it off in intervals through the day! x

I would say, it's cheaper to just have it on when your in the house on a set timer. You could always try blagging your age and opt for a 'stay warm' scheme. Basically you getting as much heating as you like for a set price...problem is you have to be over 65

its better not to turn it off completely. if you are out all day then leave it on a low setting, then turn up when you get home. if you turn it off completely it will take alot longer to reach the desired temp when you get home thus using more energy. you can buy programmable room stats for about £30-£50 so you can preset different temps throughout the day.

I'm testing that same thing at the mo. I have 3 radiators and hot water on gas and they have bumped my bills up to £61 a month. That was with the heating on at all times and working on the thermostat. I have just put it onto a timer and i find the place never really heats up properly.
When you find out, would you let me know please?

I would think always on but as low as posible/tolerable.
If it gets too cold and you switch it back on,.. then it has to work harder and stronger to regain the temp you want,.. this takes up alot more energy then the place being the same temp all the time.

yes it is cheaper, but set at lower temp, if you turn it off it takes longer to heat water.

My parents wuld always turn it off.
But I personally believe turning it on and off would be more costly than find a comfy temp. and leaving it there
