Patents aren't an issue for non-commercial use.

The simplest way I can think of doing this is mechanical. Use a solenoid to press the send button on a mobile phone. The phone has either the destination number already entered or the SMS text ready to send. Solenoid triggered by burglar alarm.

Other techniques would use the connector on the phone, but I'm not sure what protocols are used for this.

Good idea, but you'll probably run into patent problems. The device is already on the market in limited areas.
