Usually people mean an alternate dimension (or series thereof) in each of which exists a universe like ours but in which different quantum realities are manifest.
Ever see Sliders? It's like that.

A parallel world is a theoretical idea first conceived by Albert Einstein and Stephen Hawking when they were hiding from the Nazi's with Anne Frank. The basic idea is how the world would be if everything was parallel, thus no objects could ever intersect. People would crawl, trees just couldn't exist, and the world would definitely have to be flat. The whole idea was so proposterous that it kept them entertained until they finally escaped through the underground railroad.

Parallel world is the place that has the same charecteristics as that of earth.
Spriritually, parallel world means life after death, or eternal life.
Scientifically, parallel worlds are place ( mostly planets or galaxies ) where life existence has many possiblities. Examples: mars and venus- Ice caps have been found in mars
Venus has an atmosphere just like earth.

Parallel universe is proposed in the theory of the multiverse. It refers to another "universe" other than our own that exists entirely on its own. The universes are suspended in the nothingness of the multiverse. Theorists believe that when universes collide new ones are produced. This may have been how the Big Bang occur. A parallel world on the other hand refers to a planet similar to earth somewhere in our universe.

Another world, the same as ours, but the complete opposite. If you are a good person here, then in the parallel world there would be an evil you. That's the way I believe it to be anyway.

Think its the theory that there is an world the same as ours but at one point a decision or event went a different way.
eg. imagine yourself choosing the red shoes and the black shoes. Say you take the red shoes. In another parallel word you took the black shoes.
Some from one decision you have two different possibilities. Now imagine that on a global size.

A another world or demention that has the characteristics of ours, but is in some way different. For example, in a parralell world, someone who hates you would accually love you, things that might be illegal here, would be legal there, instead of the sky being blue, it'd be a different color. A serious person might be an outrages carless person. You get the picture. Be sure to read the other answers, I saw some good ones.

A person named Everett stated a theory
that there are many worlds in parallel.
Someone then theorized an estimate of
10^500 parallel worlds.
