Same reason they shave any area before surgery. To reduce the risk of any infection. Not every hospital shaves. Some do it as a precaution, others don't think that it it is necessary seeing as giving birth is not "surgery". You can request not to be shaved and they will have to comply. It's up to you. If you have a c-section they will shave the upper part where the incision will be.

The shave thing really depends on the Doc. I work in L&D and only one doctor here requests it. If there is a C/S then we'll shave the area where we cut, but not the whole shabang! I'm sure if you request not to be shaved the hospital and Doc will be OK with it... I mean isnn't bad enough dealing with all the pain and soreness with out the itching and ingrown hairs?!

Could just be a personal thing. Some may do this for that "just in case" situation where they have to stitch up any tears. I've had three kids and I didn't shave for any of them. Trimming yes but not a complete shave and I didn't have to get stitched or had gotten any infections because of the hair.

New research shows it is not needed to shave before delivery of a child or before surgical intervention as the hair follical are then open and you are more at risk of infections - especially hospital aquired infections.

I was looking forward to SOMeBody shaving me after not being able to tidy up for the last few months and was almost disappointed to hear they don't do that anymore...

They very rarely do this anymore. I've had 3 babies and never been shaved.
