Whitney Houston didn't write i will always love you. Plus the lyrics are quite basic. And the person who said mmmbop, well i hope that was a joke.
Anyway, I believe the best song ever written is Helpless by Neil Young. And he sang it with a voice to match his brilliant songwriting.
I's accept anything from Young, Bob Dylan, Bruce Springsteen or perhaps even Paul Simon. And of course Leonard Cohen's Hallelujah definately ranks near the top.
John Lennon's Imagine is undoubtedly a great song, but in terms of songwriting it is no great effort. His voice pretty much made the song, of which the lyrics are very basic. Obviously in this case basic works brilliantly, and so it must rate towards the top of the list as well.

Yesterday, Beatles. Wrapped in Grey, XTC. But you'd probably like anything by Muse better. I'd also suggest lots of Radiohead. Forget Neil Young and Bob Dylan and those whiners, that's for people 60 and above.
