After world war 2 Steiner joins the foreign legion and is reunited with his mother.

There is book called The Last Adventurer by Rolf Steiner who joined the foreign legion aged 17. I don't know about him being reunited with his mother but it is his story so he will be the person in the book and the foreign legion part matches.
