If you know his favourite Formula One team, buy him a 1/43 scale model of the car. If they are not already available, the 2006 models should be out soon.
You can look at models at this website, but there are lots of other sites where you can buy models, if there isn't a motoring bookshop close to where you live.

You could also check this website for Formula One gifts:

Finally, for serious F1 enthusiasts, you might consider the Autocourse annual, which reviews the past F1 season; it will be available shortly and will cost you a bit less than $100.
I have them going back to the very early 80's and reserved the 2006/2007 edition earlier today.

I would love to get a used (or new) F1 tyre so I can use it as a coffee table, but I don't think you can buy them, unfortunately.
Some teams do auction off some of their car parts (Minardi in particular did to manage their crippled finances in their final years, and even Ferrari had an auction sometime ago.....any part that was red did cost significantly more ("paint costs extra" according to Ross Brawn)).
A ticket to an F1 race would be nice. Team merchandise (hats, shirts etc) may please some. Latest version of Playstation F1 game is another option. At the Melbourne GP this year, I bought a CD which had a compilation of F1 sounds, some mixed with techno music (Titled "Start your engines"). On eBay, you can buy vintage Ferrari sunglasses with Ferrari logo on them (I've ordered a pair myself) - they are very 80's though....Also on eBay you can buy alarm clocks that make F1 engine sounds (way better than beeep beep beep!!)

Depends on how much you want to spend. How about a magazine subscription to the F1 monthly magazine or a trip to a Grand Prix? There's lots of memorabilia on ebay too.

Something authentic. You might still be able to buy the used FI rear tyres. Lay one down and cover with a glass tabletop: the perfect coffee table.

Or search Ebay!

Make a nice frame of his photo shot at the time of most happiest and most exciting moment of his career and present it to him in an even cute gift wrap. That will make him really happy.

One of the great features of these sunglasses is that they can be worn as regular sunglasses, or with a strap as goggles. This glasses also have Adidas' climacool pad, which adds to the comfort of the sunglasses.
