They smell, even, before they pop. You would have to intercept them to find this out. . . . and, indeed, they do smell even after they pop (or is it poop?).

The only thing the water does is cool them down a bit. The temperature of a fart at inception is 98.6 degrees and maybe let a little diffuse into the water (but not much).

An interesting little fact is that when you detect odors you are actually getting a tiny bit of whatever you are smelling in your nose (hmmm?).

The bubbles itself mean that there is gas present. since the gas is left unaltered as it journeys through water, therefore when the bubbles pop the gas will be released in the surroundings.
