Having tried all the above advice before we bought a product called Deep Root from the garden centre. It comes in a box in powder form which you mix with water. Drill some holes in either the roots or trunk of the tree and pour in. Then cover with black plastic(bin liner). You might need to repeat every week or so for a while but it certainly got rid of willow roots that were right across our garden from next door's tree. The neighbour had already chopped the tree down to the stump so we weren't upsetting anyone.

I used a substance called SBK available through most garden centres. This will kill the stump and allow the rotting process to progress - there is no chemical that will rot a tree stump down.

Not sure were you are, but try your local plant nursery, and ask for Roundup or some other chemical, drill a small holes in base, and pour a small amount into hole. You will need to wear gloves and wash up when finished. Will see results with in a week or so.

if possible drill small hole in tree stump or roots, over a period of about a week pour diesel fuel into the holes you have drilled , after few weeks the stumps will start to break up and rot away.

A chemical called SBK, available at most garden centres will do the job.

You can get proper tree killer from a garden centre or nursery BUT if it's sneaky tree killing you're after use turps. Effective with almost no after smell and it works slowly enough to look natural.

Don't ask me how I know ;-)

Hardware stores carry a product to flush down the toilet for roots growing in your sewer line. I believe its called 'root kill'. It may work other places.
