Black Friday is indeed the day after Thanksgiving, and contrary to popular belief, it is NOT the busiest shopping day of the year.
It is called Black Friday because that is the day when most stores and bsinesses "go into the black" - meaning all their debts are paid and they start making a profit.

The term Black Friday, refers to the day after Thanksgiving, when traditionally many people begin the holiday shopping season. The retail stores advertise huge markdowns and sales in their stores, and at the close of business on that day, they can see if their holiday sales promise them a good holiday sales season for the end of their fiscal year, or it is an indicator of a bad holiday season. In business, being in the red, at the end of the fiscal year, indicates a bad season, and being in the black, would indicate a good season. Hence the term, "Black Friday".
It's what all retail stores hope for. It is not necessarily the busiest shopping day, (I would think that Christmas Eve would have that beat, with the mad dash for last minute gifts), but it is still a day chosen as the indicator.

It does indeed refer at present to Friday, the day after Thanksgiving. But this is the first year in which I have heard it so styled, and I have no idea where the idiom arose.

I thought Black Friday was the day they scrapped the Avro Arrow in Canada. All those people lost their jobs on that Friday.
The Avro Arrow, is the original plane that broke the sound barrier twice. In the 60's I think.

"The day after Thanksgiving is dubbed "Black Friday" because it's when retailers are said to finally move out of the red, representing losses, and into the black, indicating profits."

It is called this due to severe price drops in the retail business...that is all.
Like they called the first day of the stock market drop "black sunday." Means a big loss in the retail market.
They us this term to show consumers that they are taking a large price drop to keep them as customers.
