My air handling unit in the attic has a gas coil with a burning pilot light to activate the furnace. Once I let go of the switch the pilot light goes out. Is there some safety switch or a malfunctioning
pilot light unit that could be the problem?

When you are holding down the button for the 20 to 30 seconds, you will notice the flame is burning this "rod" looking post which is attached to a small diameter copper tubing. This device is called the Thermocouple. This device is what keeps the pilot burning. If pilot will not stay lit, replace the thermocouple. In rare occasions, a draft from somewhere could be blowing out the flame.
Other problems could be a plugged pilot orifice or the pilot flame needs adjusting. Both, i recommend having a technician to look at.
Good Luck!

on a pilot light for my furnace - I had to hold the button for 30 seconds after I lit the flame

try up to a minute

if that does not work - and you are sure your tank has gas (valve on?)

time to call a repair technician

Red: It sounds like the "thermocouple" is burned out. time to replace it pal. Usually they last for years but you never can count on these things. The guy where you buy it can give you some hints on replacing the new one. It's quite simple. You'll need a few small tools.

Are you holding the switch for about 20 seconds after it lights?

Sometimes you can take a small tooth brush style wire brush attached to a reach handle and clean the sooted thermocouple, and it will once again work.

in most states the gas company can resolve that for no charge...get it checked before something back happens...never take those things lightly..
