I don't drink beer - but at poker games the guys can't seem to eat enough of anything with salt on it. The longer the night goes, the less picky they are about which salty snack they munch!

I don't drink but I am guessing that the best tasting would be salty pretzels or peanuts, either that or it was the cheapest for the tavern owners to serve.
