A great question . . .kudos to you for asking it. I never saw him catch that darned bird, but my question is: what the heck did the coyote live off of/what was he eating while he was so busy chasing the roadrunner?

The Coyote must have been very wealthy in order to have all the money to buy all the gadgets he used to try to catch the roadrunner. If he was that wealthy why didn't he just go down to the diner on route 66 and order a roadrunner steak?

NO! and it mad me SO angry. Similar to the Trix rabbit never getting his damned Trix either! What is this world coming to where we can't share our plentiful Trix or let Wyl E. Coyote catch his Roadrunner.
But in hindsight, if the Coyote would have caught the Roadrunner, he would most definitely eat the Roadrunner. Then the show would be over. So, in theory, this would be a bad idea.

Yup - twice as a matter of fact. One of the answerers above ("lisa_mynx") named one of those times. The other was in an episode where the coyote built a giant robot and made him chase the roadrunner (via remote control, of course). The robot actually caught him, but the coyote set the control dial on the remote to "EAT, STUPID!" and the robot ate the coyote instead. Poor guy - lol.

I like to expand on what lisa_minx had answered. It was from a 1980 episode "Soup or Sonic". Wile E. Coyote had chased the Road Runner into a pipe, which gradually contracted until when they got out, both coyote and bird were three inches in height. Wile E. then got the Road Runner to go back through the pipe. The Road Runner came back in normal size, but Wile E. was still three inches.
Once Wile E saw that the Road Runner wasn't running, he doubled back and grabbed his leg. Just as he was about to enjoy his Road Runner dinner, he finally recognized his situation, where as the Road Runner bent down his head, looked at the poor coyote and let out a deep 'Beep, Beep'.
Now I would've ran at that point, but after Wile E. dropped his utensels, he looked at the audience, scowled and held up two signs: "Okay wise guys, you've always wanted me to catch him. Now what do I do?"

once, but the coyote was shrunken to about 3 inches high... he grabs the roadrunner's leg, then holds up a sign saying something like "well, i caught him... now what do i do with him?"

During the run of the cartoon series - no, as far as I am aware of... that was, I suspect the point.
I also suspect that there are multiple variants (commercials, independents, etc...) in which something of the sort did occur - but if they didn't violate the Looney Toons universe rules (and there are actual rules, disturbingly enough, you can see them evolve during the years looney toons were made) - the Road Runner invariably got away...
