try premium gas for a tank or two, could you also describe it as pinging ?

try going from idle to about 3000 rpm with the transmission in Park. Accelerate slowly. Listen for the noise.
Then try from idle to 3000 rpm with a quick burst of throttle. If you here the noise you are referring to, it's probably a worn timing chain slapping against the timing gears and or timing cover.

I think it is the catalytic converter, I had the same sound in my Kia, and i know the converter is bad, so I think the increase in exhaust temp was making the converter bake, cracking the ceramic or fiberglass, what ever is in them.

If it is your timing chain you can check it by using either a screw driver or stethoscope. Put it on the timing chain cover put it against your ear you will hear it grind. Please be carefull, you will need someone to depress the throttle.

It sounds like it is your transmission, and its gears. Gears may be broken and pushing it up to 55 from 45mph.

could be a linkadge or the mount,
could be the tranny, better get it to a shop to get checked out,,,
i got a newer dakota and the trans is garbage
