Please explain how a draft is a liberal idea.
If you actually look at facts and history, the right is the party that loves to increase military spending, and the neo-CONSERVATIVES have put us in the predicament we are in. Not liberals.

I would think any college kid would have their own separate feelings about it quite apart from a Democratic or Republican leaning. After all, they are of draft age, as are their friends, brothers and sisters. It hits home for them in a whole different way than it does for we adults who are deciding their future, even as parents. Some are not fit for war and are afraid of what will happen to them, some will be resigned to what seems inevitable if we continue on our world policing missions (which we must, unfortunately), some will feel the patriotism that seems to run in our blood and they will not protest but go humbly to register, and some will protest loudly - angry that they feel like pawns on a chessboard.
I think dividing up the supporters and dissenters of a draft will be more complicated than simply assuming it will roll along party lines. It may be a liberal presenting the idea, but more than liberals see a draft will most likely be a necessary evil for the near future.

The very idea that instituting a draft for the express purpose so people will PROTEST against any involvement in war is idiotic! Rangel is an idiot! There are plenty of protests about the volunteer forces involvement!
Rangle wants the government to discipline the black youth of today because the black youth are wasting away... And hiding his motive behind a political cause that will end his career...
It is so blatantly obvious that our all-volunteer forces have made the greatest soldiers the USA has seen since WWII is an unintended (but excellent) consequence of Carter's malaise he called his presidency.
And the unaware youth experience less and less necessary discipline today...
It's a shame...

In my experience chatting with 'left-leaning' college kids, I found that the reason they are left leaning is that they are more informed then the average American. They realize things in this country are completely crazy and aren't being handled in a sane way. They have strong personal convictions about how things should be run. I haven't talked with any of them about this issue but would assume a mixed response. Some would accept the argument that the war would be more personal to many Americans if people they knew and were related to were over there. Others would see it as another big mistake in a comedy of errors.

Common Sense –
When it comes to avoiding the ‘shouldering of responsibility’ to service of country, Republicans are light years ahead of Democrats. Here is just a very partial list of Chickenhawks:
George W. Bush (R-TX)
Richard "Dick" Cheney (R-WY)
Donald "The Don" Rumsfeld
Karl Rove
Paul Wolfowitz
I. Lewis "Scooter" Libby
Michael Savage
Michael Reagan
William "Bill" O'Reilly
Rush Limbaugh
Sean Hannity
David Limbaugh
Rep. Newton Leroy "Newt" Gingrich (R-GA)
William "Bill" Bennett

As for the question, very few college students will support a draft. The only real argument for one is that had a draft been in effect before we invaded Iraq, we probably would have avoided that mistake. And, there does not seem to be an abundance of Republican youth running to enlist. In order to meet its quotas the military has had to substantially lower it expectations of the number, intelligence, and criminal pasts of new recruits.

Unfortunately beach bum is out in the dark on this one. Charlie Rangel of Ny has proposed it as away to get more rich kids to go to war instead of all the poor. Remember folks this military of ours is all volunteer. If a life in the military is better than out for someone then that their choice. The people i know in Iraq are happy to be there and would like to finish the job. Wars are like fistfights they end themselves in due time. The liberal college kids wouldn't support a draft because they don't support war under any circumstances. No wmd! so we drop everything and leave so the extremists can take over and rule Iraq. Of course not, the people of Iraq deserve better than that. We should give them back their country better than we found it.

I dont think so becsue if they did theyd forgo the deferment gained by college and enlist rotc would be over flowing then. MOst of them are followers of the pop cult at the time, sad but true. Unless we expand Iraq and let it become like Viet Nam with 500,000 troops there, which is a likly possibility

What's liberal about conscription?
But some "liberal" college kids will vote against self-interest because they are too young and inexperienced to have a clue about the real issues involved, and for much the same reason incapable of realizing how incapable they are of making an informed opinion. Nothing new here--it's the definition of that age group.

You know, it makes me sad for America when I hear such false propaganda... I mean seriously, do you feel good about making up lies to you can maybe score some points? You are the one that loses in the end when you make ppl believe things that aren't true.
The draft is an old out-dated idea that a recent democratic congressman brought up as a point that due to Bush's war, if we needed more troops, we might need to re-enact. Quite frankly, if we do need more troops based on this insane Bush war, we might need the draft. Now, what part of that is a liberal view only? What part of that of that blames a liberal?
Stop your propaganda. The ppl have woken up to it already.
