This is for one of my psychology class, I wanted to know how people felt about sexual predators towards children. There opinion on what the sexual predator is thinking as well as if you were a parent what would be you initial reaction and if say your kid fell victim what would you do about it. This topic is a very disturbing one, and I know allot of people may feel this is a joke but its not. Ive gathered about 20 re actions and feelings from adults that I know and also, what do you think we can do to bring this big problem down. thank you everyone for your time.

I feel very sorry for them. So many people say so many hateful things about these people, as if they were worse than murderers or something. What they do to children is absolutely unacceptable, but I think a lot of these people just need serious help. People always say "once a pedophile, always a pedophile" and I think that may be true. One of the hardest things to change about a person is their sexual preference. I don't even know if it's possible. I have never heard of a gay person just becoming straight or vice-versa. Even the people who "come out of the closet" usually say that they have either known or been confused about it the whole time that they were supposedly straight. The same applies to pedophiles. I don't think they can change their inclination to be attracted to children. They CAN change whether or not they act upon it. And this is what I think the focus should be on in therapy. It just sucks for them that they are attracted to children. I mean imagine if it was looked down upon in society for you to be attracted to the person YOU are attracted to. You could refrain from doing anything about it, but those feelings would always be there torturing you and making you hate yourself. I am not saying this is the case with all pedophiles. I mean some of them not only molest children, but they kill and mutilate them as well. Those kind of people seem to lack any kind of conscience. Either that or they are just plain evil. I don't think these people desrve any kind of sympathy.
A really great movie on this subject is "The Woodsman" with kevin Bacon as the pedophile. You should really check it out.

Indeed this a very hot topic to talk about!
I will try (o:
To experience how my child becomes the victim of a sexual assault must be undescribably painful and I can't say from my current status in life (I don't have children), how I would react, if my child became the victim of a pedophile.
There are a lot of ways to help the victims and their families and it is necessary to protect them against further abuse by the predator (and also by the media, by the way).
Very little is discussed about how to deal with the offender himself (mainly it's a man, so I keep this gender expression), and the initial reaction is to lock him up and keep him away from society. There are indeed some men, who are unrepentant and in these cases there might be no other sollution as to lock him up for protecting society against his deeds.
Dealing with this topic, one should face that actually many of them are afraid of their obsession, but don't know how to deal with it. In my opinion the better way to deal with those persons is to find out, what the motives are and how he developed the deed.
The perpetrator is not suddenly chosing and raping his victim. There is a period of "preparation", while he is observing and trying to check out his opportunities.
It is shown, that a pedophile is partly unconsciously "planning" his deed by approaching his victim little by little. Even if he doesn't want to or is afraid of doing it.
To understand, what is going on in their minds and to know the structure of the process from observation until the deed itself will help to prevent further assaults, because it helps to intervene early enough to prevent planning his assault fully.
And not least the delinquent himself becomes able to free himself from acting out, what is in his mind. Therefore he must undergo a therapeutical treatment.
As I said, the latter just grips, if the offender is consciously aware of his guilt and repents his deed and it does not negate the care and security for the victims and their families, which of course must be assured.

First of all there are different kinds of "predators". The basics are the seeking offender (the worst kind) and the offender of opportunity (not much better). The seeking offender is the the one who is more likely to kidnap & kill. The offender of oportunity is the guy that has a 15 year old daughter who brings her friend over & he has bad thoughts & acts upon them. The Offender of oportunity is more common then most people would like to believe.
How do I feel about them?.... I dont like either one.
I hate to say this, but I believe there is not much that can be done to bring this problem down. Educating of children to know a problem & avoid it is the strongest defense.
As a parent, I would be furious & unforgiving if my daughter fell victim to either one.

These people are called pedophiles. Unfortunately a normal looking citizen can be a pedophile. You cannot detect one which makes it scary. Usually you can tell how a criminal or drug user may look, but pedophiles you cant. Teachers, coaches, and even priests have been pedophiles. They look normal. When these guys are caught, usually they go back and do it again. It is something that cannot be brought down unless they get some type of counseling

I don't even want to discuss what I would do if a pedophile targeted one of my kids.
What I do believe - absolutely - is that if society did a better job of recognizing and treating the victims of abuse we would see a drastic decrease in the number of offenders. Almost all predators are victims of abuse themselves.

I am probably over-reacting. I am very concerned about pedophiles. If one ever bothered any of the children in my family they should hope the law gets them before I do.
IMO we should open Alcatraz up and put them there, off by themselves.
Once a pedophile always a pedophile.
