the most frequent reason is peer and social pressure. another is the effect of cool advertisements showing that smoking is a status symbol giving smokers a cool appeal(which is absolutely false). nicotine in cigarette is highly addictive and it is hard to quit when you have started it already so many smokers who plan to quit need a lot of discipline and sacrifice.

Usually people smoke because they want to be well recognized in a certain social level. It is a stereotype view from the community (the bad one actually). E.g. By smoking, some people may think that you are cool (for men, to prove that you are real gentleman and brave) and can easily be accepted to some society. It has no good reason, but it's just like a lifestyle.
However, this bad stereotype should be changed because smoking can cause really serious health problem.

A lot of people start smoking because the are young and rebellious and don't really understand how addicting it can become until it's too late. They think it's cool, and plus their friends are doing it, so they do it to to be a part of the crowd. By the time they've gotten older, they have a addiction problem that is extremely hard to conquer - smoking.

Peer pressure,in the name of stress, curiosity, this all are small part of the excuses people make up just to legally smoke.
Smoke make your mouth, hair, cloth, just everywhere stink.
These people sit on their brain, that why they smoke,no offence,if you are smoker, try sitting somewhere else, then, you will quit
