For that matter why are we oftentimes referred to as "Americans" and also called "US citizens?" The fact is that we are a part of North America. Further north lies Canada. . Further south we find Central America and South America. SO for example, we do not have a good relationship with Venezuela, but she is part of South America. Yet (despite that we have "states" and that Venezuela is a country) she calls herself Venezuela but does not define herself as an "American." The same applies to Canada. It seems to me that the US calls herself "American" to make her seem larger than she is.

The country in question is called the United States of America.
In the beginning, the English colonists overthrew the authority of the king. This event was and continues to be called the American Revolution. From that era, people here referred to themselves
Americans. Canada became a country later and it had less as self-identification of American. The same goes for Mexico.

Americans are from he United States and there is some ambiguity in naming between American or of the United States.
In general, the formal name will be the United States Marines, but they are also called American.

The name American is not to be grandiose. It started as the national self-identification of the colonists as they became citizens at the start of the new country.

I don't know... why is it called the "European Union" when there are other European countries that aren't a part of it?

And why does China call itself "Zhongguo"? That means, literally, that they're the center of the UNIVERSE. No matter how much you want the Yanqui to go home, you have to admit that that is WAY more pretentious than people from the U.S. calling themselves "Americans".

Last time I checked, U.S. Americans didn't go around telling people from other American countries what they were allowed to call themselves. So why do other countries feel the need to lecture us? Surely there are bigger issues to worry about.

If you're from Canada or Mexico or Venezuela, feel free to call yourself an American. That's fine. Nobody from the United States will mind one bit. But, seeing as how we're from The United States of America, we're going to keep calling ourselves Americans. After all, everyone would get mad at us if we did something to imply that we were the only United people in the world... let alone the only people from States.

The US CItizens is a historical thing which disenfranchises the resident aliens. It goes back as far as when blacks weren't considered citizens even after they had been freed from slavery. Basically the US political system is only interested in registered voters, not a citizen means not a voter. US Americans tend to forget they are only one of the many American countries, but then everyone else knows that, so Canadians wouldn't call themselves Americans and neither would Mexicans, even though it is technically correct.

It's a form of bigotry and arrogance, since people from South America, Central America AND North America are all Americans. We think that it just is representational of all superior white men in the US.

What is an American? A living, breathing being from any of the above continents.

I know some Canadian and Mexican guys who were signed in with my sister in the U.S. Marines. Any army is an international meeting place for people, only these guys are fighting for the U.S. cause rather than a cause for their own country. They might live in the U.S. and want to join up because they might like their life in the States.
So really, you could call them American troops, because most of them are all from the Americas.
