Lao Tzu spent a lifetime contemplating that very question after dreaming he was a butterfly. It is a question on the fragility of ones perception of reality and the subjective nature OF that perception. Of course the entire question assumes that bitterflies actualy DO dream, which, if they do...then I suppose it is possible you just may be a butterflies dream...and if you are, then so are the rest of us and if that is the case...the could how about dreaming up a better outcom for things...cause things as they are now are pretty messed up....

Maybe you're a man dreaming you're a butterfly.

After my first child was born, I lost contact with reality which was very frightening. During the birth of my child, I had been injected with scapolomine. In some patients, scapolomine can bring on delusions, which I believe caused my loss of reality. When my second child was born, I was also administered scapolomine. My sense of reality was not as frightening, but still there.

Dental procedures, under the influence of "gas", has the same affect the scapolomine had on me; loss of reality, a fear that I am dead and in another world.

What drugs are you taking?

Actually, this phrase was attributed to by Zhuang Zi.
His ideas were very abstract and like most Taoist, revolves around what is real and what is an illusion.

The story goes that Zhuang Zi fell asleep and he dreamt that he was a butterfly, flying around. When he woke up, he came upon this suggestion.

Was this what you were asking?
