I disagree that "they", meaning Republicans, are so mean and hurtful. That they don't agree with you or a lot of other people doesn't meant that they are "mean and hurtful." If you have an opinion about something, like gay rights or abortion rights, that is your opinion. There is nothing mean and hurtful about it. It's only natural that someone would have an opinion about it.
But back to your question. Do Christians run the Republican party? The Christian Right does have a tremendous amount of power in the party. On the other hand, are they Christian in the same way that Jesus, who was immensely tolerate of others, was Christian? I think that to be Christian means to not be judgmental of others. "Judge not, lest ye be judged."
However, the Christian Right are the only folks in the party. Others who are fiscal conservatives are also in the party. Some of those folks have power, too.
The fact is that the party has many facets. Same with the Democrats. Actually, the Democratic party used to consist of the white, racist, southern wing and an eastern liberal wing. Eventually, the racist part of the party died out. But there are many people who make it up. There are many people who "run" the party. There are many different ideas within the party. Some ideas are expressed more than others.

No, Christians do not run the Republican party. The hard core Christians represent about 33% of the Republican party. If they had their way there would be a Christian Jihad in the USA to make everyone a Christian. Religion and politics should not be mingled. Keep religion (I don't care which one) out of politics. This is what the founding fathers wanted. We don't require religion to tell us what is right and wrong.

I would not agree that Christians "run" the Republican party.
I am a Christian and can tell you that at this time in history, there are people from both parties taking pot-shots at Christians.
I fear that Christians may well be the biggest scapegoats of political dissatisfaction with our current administration, because our President claims to be a Christian.
And politics in general are kind of nasty! It's why our moms said not to talk about them in "polite company."
