I am looking at cars to purchase to replace my Taurus possibly, I want to know if the Aldero is a good reliable car, mechanically sound in other words to buy,I have heard the brakes are not the greatest, but replacing brakes does not bother me. Any thing else other than that?

I haven't heard very many good things about them. I had a friend who had a 2001, nothing but problems, steering, electrical. Try a Toyota Camry or Subaru Legacy for reliable dependable transportation.

Try to stay away form the 4 cylinder Aleros, major engine problems and reliability issues. The 6 cylinder versions on the other hand have many improvements and from what i've seen are more reliable by a long shot. OR, IF, you can find the V8 definately go for it if you have the $$$ to spend on it. Very Very rare and extremely mean, sporty, and fast. But either the V6 or rare V8 models are a good choice. I dont like front wheel drive cars but these are nice cars and also good "road" cars. UPDATE!!!!! SORRY I was thinking of the Aurora that had the V8 option, still a front wheel drive small car. but very awesome they produced it with a V8, 4.0L with 250 HP. Only 500 were built. So sorry to whomever was offended by that, but yes they did build a sister car to the alero which was compact, front wheel drive, and v8. As far as front wheel drive having no room, what about the Cadillacs that were mid size with frd and v8 or the toronado....Also the new Buick Lucerne is offered with a V8 and is front wheel drive.

The Alero is basically just a pontiac grand am with slightly different body. I test drove a used one and I hated it. Cheap, plasticky interior. The car only had 50,000 miles on it, but it sounded like 150,000. The power windows in the back didn't work, so the salesman opened the back doors and slapped each door panel on the inside and they started working. What a heap!
And no, it isn't just that one car. I know at least four people who have owned Grand Ams or Aleros, and they all hate them with a passion. The Grand Am that I test drove was awful, too. Even the one with only 30,000 miles on it.

The 2003 alero is the only one recommended by "A leading consumer magazine", and also how the heck could an alero come with a V-8 it's FRONT WHEEL DRIVE!

want my opinion?? best small car that you can get used is a chevy malibu, get a 99. You can get one for $4000 or under. only problem is leaky rear light, that's it. Best small car i drove ever other than the focus which is good too. Malibu has more room. Jap cars are ok, but costly to fix. Good luck
