I don't touch the stuff, but it is readily available, though I think "pills" are more of the preference of the Japanese. Don't be fooled by the stereotype that asians or japanese don't use drugs. That's a load of crap! It is VERY common for Japanese youth in Tokyo, especially.
As far as beer - Kirin, Sapporo & Asahi are their local brands. Japanese beer is quite good.
It looks as if you have a typical japanese poster responding a few posts below. Don't be fooled! The japanese NEVER admit ANY fault with themselves or the country!

Yes, they do. However, if you get caught, you can get into jail for 15 years!! So don't risk it. The major part of it used to come from North Korea, however, as there are many problems inbetween these two countries, and tradeships aren't allowed to port or dock at the moment, the supply is low, and demand makes the price high. Otherwise it is also grown in Hokkaido, but it has already snowed, so again, the supply is low, which makes it very expensive to buy! Now if you are not Japanese, and get caught, you still will be in jail for at least a year, when and if the trial is done before your one year, while you are detained not in jail but in a dention prison, you will not get anything in English, acttually both detention and normal prison have the same rules on that matter. All items must be Japanese or with a legal translation to it. Once you get sentenced, you go to the actual jail, and from there within the year, you will be deported. Ouch, you won't be able to come in a long while, and your records will be on the black list for the same duration as the jail sentence. So, it is not worth it is it?
Plus you will have mid-eastern dealers who lace them with one chemical or another, so it can be highly volatile and toxic, and not to mention addictive. Your chances for getting arrested are again higher!
Now as for smoking normal cigarettes, yes the Japanese population is a strong smoking country. You can still buy cigarettes in vending machines, so anyone can actually buy them. Plus they are cheaper than some western countries.
As for beer, there are 4 major brewers, so you'll have to try what you like.
Stay out of trouble, if you don't want to eat Japanese meals three times a day in a very strict detention prison or actual prison. Don't think its sushi and tempura!! Far from it ~~ unless of course you want to go on a strict diet and regime of punctuality, and told when to do any and every move, then you can get it quite easly in Tokyo.

A few might, as they do in ALL countries - but I don't recommend that YOU do if you come here because the penalties ARE harsh in comparison to many other countries (particularly ones where English is the main language.)
Plus, as a foreigner you would be assumed to have smuggled the stuff in, and you might have problems convincing people that you bought it here - they're likely to be more aggressive to a foreigner for the same reason that America is building a fence (or wall, whatever it is) at their border with Mexico! It's just not right when foreigners enter your country and break the law...!
As for beer, many 'beers' aren't really beer at all - they're designed to taste a lot like beer, but they're not made with hops because beers made with hops have a high tax levied on them by the government. So people (who WANT to) can drink a lot more 'beer' for less yen!
; )
You can read some opinions on Japanese beer here;

Yes-people smoke weed and hash in Japan. It's kind of hard to have statistics on that as people don't admit to it. Although the punishment is harsh, recreational cannabis users tend to fly completely under the radar. Rolling papers etc. are sold openly, but you don't see Japanese folks rolling their own tobacco cigarettes.
Law enforcement is much more concerned with the methamphetamine trade, so those who keep their "happa" amongst their own circle tend to get away with it. For the cops busting meth injecting career criminals is a lot better career move than hassling otherwise law abiding cannabis consuming citizens. That may be why you hear it's rare in Japan-it ain't necessarily so. That being said, I wouldn't be complacent at all about the consequences of being busted-a friend of mine did six months for some hash. Textile hemp is legal in Japan, but you have to have a special license to grow it.

Of course they smoke, however, not many % of people smoke.
If you want to find some pot in Japan, easiest place you can get would be Shinjuku in Tokyo.
Many people in Japan drink Sapporo or Kirin beer which are domestic brand and draft one is very popular. You can also get any type of the beer in everywhere!! I love Sapporo Draft Beer!!!

I have a japanese friend that came to america when she was about 25. She said she had never seen pot before in her life. nor had she encountered any drug, drug user, dealer, etc. and i know in other asian countries like korea this is true. they don't have a drug problem there, their would likely be a huge penalty for it, and they just don't have it there.

Only a portion. It is illegal.
Does the people of your country smoke it? It is the same.
Hey don't post such question, the answer is obvious, and improper in public. I doubt your common sense.
