Although most of the answers are generally correct, that it is illegal. There is some confusion and misinformation being spread around the internet. There is no 24 hour window that you can have an illegal copy of anything. If you download a copy of something with a copyright associated with it, it's illegal the moment you download. The *only* thing that makes a copy legal is if you physically do it your self from an original source and you use that copy as a back up only. Both copies must be yours. you cannot redistribute them etc.

You can download many games for free that are homebrew, meaning they are not made by a giant corporate conglomerate. From a legal standpoint thre is really no way to access free games for download that ARE made by a gaming studio.
