Regionally, always. Ask a native American.
A quantum leap in our foreign policy happened in the 1890's. But we have never had the same brand of imperialism as the classic European imperial powers. Though we had missionaries and troops in China at the time of the Boxer Rebellion, for instance, we were in favor of open trade for all, and opposed to the economic rape practiced by the European powers and Japan, though nobody seems to have noticed at the time. Since 1945, with the Europeans having spent themselves out of empire, and the USSR threating the world during most of that time, U.S. policy was simply to apply a Pax Americana because nobody else could. Again and still, imperialist but with an unappreciated and very important twist. There is, of course, a certain degree of arrogance, not to mention inelegance, in this position, but it's simply a case of the old "dirty job but somebody's got to do it" thing.

In our war with Spain. We were able to gain a great deal of land from the Spanish holdings. Actually it began just before this during the Indian wars when America was spreading out towards the west. Similar story elsewhere in the world. Nearly every nation has done this before.

Under President McKinley and the Spanish-American War. We invaded Cuba on the pretext of the "sinking" of the USS Maine battleship. (It was later shown that the Maine sunk due to an exploded boiler, not hostile action) After defeating the Spanish, we took over Cuba, the Phillipines, and a few other pieces of real estate.

That was the beginning of US imperialism, and it hasn't stopped.
