put my tree up last weekend....as well as the rest of the decorations. Christmas lights get turned on Dec 1, but the cinnomen apple pie candle is lit every night for that nice christmassy smell. Oh and the wife put the nuts out in the bowl on the coffee table already. Thats when I know its Christmas.

Stores begin decorating for Christmas around the end of October. The first "official" day of Christmas shopping is the last Friday in November which for us is the day after our Thanksgiving Holiday. During the annual Macy's Thanksgiving Day Parade (in New York City -Macys is a big department store) a float with Santa usually brings up the rear and that means the start of the Christmas season. All the stores are beautifully decorated and Christmas music is played all the time. Even the grocery stores are decorated for Christmas and have sales on the things you might need for Christmas dinner-e.g. turkeys, hams, candies etc. Most shopping centers have a beautifully decorated Santa Village or fancy chair for Santa and children can go visit Santa and have their picture taken with him.

In my Church, Christmas is an "octave" which basically means it is celebrated for a lot longer than a day. It's an entire season. However, the celebration of Christmas does not begin until Christmas Eve night. Before that is a preparation time called Advent, which is a time of looking inward and purification for the great event.

We put all the Christmas stuff (to include CDs and movies) away after New Years and don't get them out until the day after Thanksgiving. My wife is SUPER excited because, "That's Tomorrow!"
