Short of course for Pakistanis - but this is a little interesting.
It is generally regarded as an offensive or racists term and yet is PURELY an abbreivation. Arguably it should be no more offensive than calling a person from Scotland a Scot or from Britain a Brit.
The Australians often refer to the Pakistani cricket teams as the Pakis - and nobody seems to take any great offence.
George Bush is not beyond using the term either.
I guess like a lot of things, it does depend on how it is used and with what slant - if any - intended.

Of course it refers to People from Pakistan, an abbreviation sometimes used as a derogatory term but only with added explatives. The Paki shop is an integral part of British life, where would you get your milk & bread on bank holidays without them?
Of late they are under fire because of the Muslim extremism that permiates from Pakistan & the home bred Nutters that blow themselves & other up, but love 'em or hate 'em they are in the UK to stay. Did you ever hear a Paki from Glasgow speak ?Wow.

whatever the sayer intends when he says it.
Wiki says that the abbreviation Paki acquired offensive connotations in the 1960s when used by British tabloids to refer to decolonisational subjects in a derogotary and racist manner.
but I think I recall it being sayd somewhere that it also had a non-offensive and meaning once., but i can't find that reference right now.
it's interesting to see how much influence Britain had on the world though: The word Pakistan was created in 1933 by Rahmat Ali Chaudhry, a Cambridge law student, to refer to the independence movement that existed prior to the British decolonisation project of ex-London law students. It derives from the Urdu words for "pure country".

This is just short for 'Pakistani', someone from Pakistan.
It became an offensive term because some Brits used to use it to describe anyone 'who looked a bit foreign', but mainly Indians, I suppose.
I haven't heard anyone say this word for years, though.I guess people are just better educated, or wiser, nowadays.

this term was the general term for the coloured men who earned a living selling from a suitcase on your doorstep. They were all known as pakimen, and the name has stuck. A large black man carrying a big suitcase came knocking on my door last week and I had shunted him away with a "Not today thank you" before I found he was my new doctor..............
