Well it all depends on your age. However, most promotions come from taking on a project or assisting with something that needs done and that no one else is interested in doing. Often times that will involve some possible overtime and extra work that was never requested by your boss.

However, if you attempt such things and do not get promoted or get raises, then you may need to consider moving to another business. Most big moves or jumps in pay come from going to another company.

If you are capable and willing to step up to the plate, age will often be overlooked. Although you will still run into some people that are ageist so I cannot promise that it would completely not ever be a problem.
