It wasn't a novel, but it's based on a play by Peter Shaffer, a british playwright. He's also known for the play "Equus" (which for you Harry Potter fans is being staged on the West End with Daniel Radcliffe playing the role of Alan.)

I double checked wikipedia and it told me that shaffer based his play on a short play by the Russian writer Pushkin titled "Mozart and Salieri" - which I hadn't known.

Yes. Amadeus by Peter Schaffer.
Just for the record, although it makes a compelling story, there is no evidence Salieri had any animosity towards Mozart, or that the Requiem caused a mental breakdown in the young genius. He did, however, die in abject poverty.

lalabee is correct. It's based on Peter Shaffer's play. I saw it performed in a minimalist format once. (It was in a back room of a pub in Birmingham, UK.) It was brilliant. It took away all the distractions of costumes and sets, etc., and you concentrated on the spoke word.

Tom Hulsey's performance in the film version was very powerful also.

Didn't know about the Pushkin thing. Thanks for the info lalabee!
