'smart' foreign students in the USA then to allow them to have work visas when they graduate.
Now, I don't know about you but I graduated with an Electrical Engineering degree where about 30% of my fellow classmates were from other countries.
I am completely opposed to this. I think we need to stop letting in so many foreigners to our schools and accept more citizens into our colleges.
And GEEZ as far as letting them have work visas... I don't want to even get started on this. Don't we, in professional degrees, have enough freaking competition now as it is?
Opinions?

Is this just the 'elite' talking about things they don't understand about the working class?

Sorry but get your own country to educate you and give you opportunities... why come to mine? Why is the USA thought of as this HAND OUT FOR FREE to all who qualify. Our citizens should come first. Look to your own countries to give you the same, not us.

he seems to be thinking more in terms of the "country" and the "economy" than in terms of "what's good for Americans"
what's good for the economy isn't always what's good for Americans... sometimes it is... sometimes it's not...
it can be a dangerous trap to fall into... in my opinion...

Welcome to the Global Village. The world have been overrun by global conglomerate corporations, banks, etc., that could care less about your borders, your country, or your job. All of us are going to be required to have more than an elementary education to even be the janitor, let alone any kind of technical work. I mention janitor because in the far east, few in our country could pass the test for that job with our education the way it is. The world as we know it does not exist anymore. The master plan includes the leveling of the playing field for all in opportunity, wages, etc. and we all need to be prepared or we won't make it . As Bush goes to Vietnam to find workers cheaper than the Chinese for American Corporations, we all need to wake up, or one day we will discover we are a third world country owned almost completely by foreigners. You should be happy you have such a degree that will help insulate you from what is coming.

One of the reasons we have so many foreign students in this country is because they ARE smart. There are few, if any, attending "remedial" classes (yes "remedial" classes even at the better colleges) I'll bet you would have to agree that "about 30% of [your] fellow classmates" were very intelligent and that they were very confident in themselves. The problem with students in the United States is that they feel the world OWES them something just because they have a degree. Wrong! Everyone has to work hard at whatever they do!

Yeah, it is the "elite" talking about something to benefit themselves. What can you say? It's human nature. If you really want to help your profession, join your engineering union and get your voice heard. Doctors in America make tons of money and they have one of the biggest lobby groups in the country. Do you think they'd let their jobs be outsourced to India or China? Nurses on the other hand have more members in their union, but they barely have a voice, all their jobs go to foreign countries and they get run over all the time by doctors.

It's called competition. Also, they bring their money into our country, and spend it in our universities. And we learn from them, as well.
Assuming they are typical college students, they will not have a spouse and children "back home" to send their money to and will likely spend it living here, while they work here.
In addition, and I didn't see it mentioned yet, but as it stands now, we have many foreign students here. They graduate and take their expertise back home.
One last thought: It potentially could impact the illegal immigration in a positive way, but I need to chew on that one.

We need to become more competitive with the world. Our country needs to become less dependent on foriegn engineers. China and Japan have more than twice the amount of engineering students we have. This can't be a country of Lawyers and Doctors.

Its not just in your country where there is heavey competition. Even in Asia there is high competition for jobs. I live in Thailand by the way. I still have a year to graduate from college.
High competition is one of the attributes of globalization. We all just have to fit in.
Now, you are beginning to sound like a conservative rather than liberal, hehehehe.

~I've gotta agree. We should continue exploiting the kids in the Thai sweatshops, ripping off Middle East, Caspian and South American oil, subsidizing our farmers so the Africans can't market their crops and continue to live in poverty and starvation, driving our Hummers so the Scandanavians can't breathe, overfishing the Grand Banks (and every other decent fishing ground on the planet), manipulating the money supply to subjugate the economies of everyone on the planet to the almighty dollar, and then sending in troops when someone takes offense - but under no circumstances allow bright, innovative minds and industrious workers into the land of the free and the home of the brave just so you can get a job that they may be more qualified for and may do better at. At least that way, you will have a better chance of getting your three weeks of vacation after 5 years and your sick days and overtime. But hey, what do I know. I just read some BS on a statue in New York harbor and was fool enough to believe that it was supposed to stand for something. Silly me.

Compitition is great! It will produce greater technology. However unless the American stuudent is ready to knuckle down they will lag behind! Foregion students pay much more in tution then resident students, if this is the land of oppturnity then so be it live with it,
