The acting, cinematography, art direction, etc. were all first rate, which only makes my dissatisfaction with the ending more pronounced.

The Art Director works with the Production Designer, who are responsible for the "look" of a film. Think in terms of color, light and line. Colors of costumes of characters, the colors of the inside of their apartments. They basically decide what locations to use or draw the plans for the sets on a stage. Usually, these people are the most creative in an artistic sense of everyone on the crew. They have strong art history backgrounds, architecture, interior design, landscaping, etc. Quite a diverse background covering things like what kind of tank is the right one to use on "Saving Private Ryan" to what kind of ropes and sails to use on the boats on "Master and Commander" to what kind of historically correct sword Johnny Depp uses in "Pirates of the Caribbean".

Sorry but that guy's confusing art direction with cinematography. Art Direction is the way the 'set' looks at any given time. If the scene is taking place in a diner, then the art director would oversee that it really looked like a diner. Directors use Storyboards which are actual drawings of what each scene looks like, the art director oversees these drawings to make sure a 1970s scene LOOKS like it's really the 1970s and so on...

Art direction refers to the person in charge of directing the Stills (fixed images) in the films
The task of arranging the still photographs, fixed objects in the set, orientation of things on the set etc are the work of the art director

It usually is the comparison of one scene to the next that draws an emotional response out of the viewer...
Picture someone at their desk in a hurried frenzied pace when suddenly the picture cuts to an open field view of the Cheyenne Mountain range and you go, "Whoa!" at the beauty...
