the sound from laptop is high pitched, like a record played back too fast.?

It's exactly the same when using headphones, so it's not the laptop speakers. When listening to web radio, movies, skype etc, men's voices sound like women. And women sound like a squeak.
It's a Compaq EVO N410 laptop running XP. Any ideas?

Try rolling back the sound drivers or reinstalling them.
