I have a '95 volvo 960 and i've noticed that gas consumption has been pretty fast, I've only had the car for about 3 weeks, however, at times i smell a strong odor of gasoline, my dad had it looked at a mecanic once, but they told him no gas was leaking... if there is no leak, where is the gas odor coming from?

If you have a strong fuel oder then you are probably not burning all of the fuel in the engine. This can be caused by an improperly tuned engine, (spark plugs, wires, coil, etc), the spark is either not hot enough to burn all of the fuel because the plugs are worn or if the wires are old and the resistance is too high the proper voltage will not get to the plug. A weak coil will cause this as well. Being a 95 model then the O2 sensor could also be bad causing the computer to adjust the air/fuel mixture incorrectly which will also cause a strong fuel smell.
All of these will cause high fuel consumption.

it sounds like its running too rich ,this could be anything causing it,you need to have it scaned and a read out of the operating parameters to see it its o2 sensor, map sensor, etc,a quick check is to pull the dipstick and smell the oil,if it smells gassy too then you are also harming your engine by washing all that fuel down the cylinder walls, dont start guessing at stuff, get it diagnosed and save yourself some headaches

if the engine is running rich or too much fuel is getting to the engine, it wont burn it all off and you will have that gassy odor, i would have your dad take it to a mechanic and have a computer scan done on it , i know on my gmc sierra the trottle positioning sensor being hung open caused that one time

It could have been a lazy mechanic. If you smell gas it is likely to be leaking somewhere and dangerous to yourself and others around you to drive.
