It seems there are 2 issues here, one is anti-African American and the other is anti-Semitic. Most people that I know are neither. Considering slavery was only about 140 years ago, I think we are doing as well as can be expected, though there are many back-sliders amongst us. Also Edward Longshanks (one of the most vicious English Kings) drowned a group of Jews after he had used all their money to fight one of the numerous wars with France. I don't know if we will ever completely eradicate these hatreds but we sure would be better off if we tried.

I think that Richards is insecure; also he felt threatened. Gibson comes across as an egomaniac. They both need to stay off certain substances. Of course there was no excusing what they did. Fame often seems to bring out the worst in people. Because of all the money and attention, many come to believe that they can get away with anything. As far as American culture goes, what there is of it is going down the tube, aided and abetted by Hollywood and the advertising media.

Mel knows better. I don't know why he said those things.
As for Michael, he was in a comedy club and those things go on all the time. I've heard comedians do a lot worst and nothing is said. This is blown way out of proportion just so someone can sue or play the "poor me" game.

Sometimes people get so frustrated they say things.
To me Richards was going off on something that happens quite often. Cant tell you how many times I was somewhere trying to have a pleasant time when there were a couple people who just would not shutup and were being loud.
Mel Gibson was drunk.

If Richards had made his tirade about Catholics, he would have gotten off scot-free.
