I believe that it was called a "set" because the old TV's were made up of sets of different tubes.

The most logical conclusion we can land at is - it is an assembly of numerous components; so it's obviously a "set".

Another interesting line of thought - it could have been trimmed down from "TV setup" :) Makes sense! A setup for tele-vision.

You have a TV Tube, 2 Speakers and a Remote control. What do you call it. A TV???.
