If you mean $150,000 in canadian currency, I'd stick to renting. You'd be lucky to find the tiniest old dump of a place for $200,000 in Calgary. Edmonton's at least as bad. Modest homes in Edmonton are still selling fast at well over $300,000.
You'll have trouble finding rentals too, just so you know. There are also new "fees" when renting: you may "have to" pay an "application fee" just to fill out a piece of paper applying for a rental, then a "holding fee" for the landlord to hold on to your application until something becomes available (they often don't tell you if there are vacancies until after they get the application fee from you), then other fees. They're not bothering to clean the rentals any more or clean the carpets because there are so many people willing to do it at their own expense just to have a place to rent. Sad but true.

I hope you do a lot of research before you load the truck! Vacancy rates are on the minus side. There are many working homeless living in Calgary. You can't buy a place for $150,000. The average price for a house in Calgary is about $370,000, although it may be subsiding, a bit. Check any MLS realtor site for available homes. Good luck.
Are you really sure you want to move to Calgary? Hope you have a damn good job to come to.

You are not being realistic I'm afraid since the average house price in Calgary is approx. $400,000. There isn't a house to be had in that price range. You would be fortunate to find a studio size condo - though not one where location matters. You would be hard pressed to find a mobile home which may be your only option in that price range. I realize I sound like the "gloom and doom" but unfortunately it's the reality factor in this vibrant hot market. Even in the outlying communities the prices are beyond your range. I honestly don't know where near any of the bigger cities in Alberta that you're going to find a house. My suggestion would be to look for a condo in some of the retro fitted buildings. You will likely be looking in the 450-600 sq.ft range for that price. I know it doesn't sound very promising but if you aren't in a hurry and have time to wait and check out places then you may have a better chance. Good Luck.

Okay, first you realize that that isn't going to happen. As far as I know, unless your looking at a mobile home in forest lawn, its not happening.
Good luck with finding something decent to rent. Lots of basement suites, and thats it.
