When a pregnant woman lies flat on her back, the enlarged uterus may press on the vena cava. The vena cava is a large vein that returns oxygen depleted blood to the heart. This pressure on the vena cava reduces the flow of blood returning to the heart which in turn lowers your blood pressure and can cause dizziness, pale skin, and clamminess.

in the 1st few months it matters little but later in pregnancy it cuts off blood and oxygen to the baby and it's uncomfortable to you. my doctor said your body will tell you when it's too far to be sleeping flat on your back up till then do what feels comfortable however laying on the left side allows the best blood flow 4 the baby

It has to do with the position and pressure on the uterus and placenta, that effects the oxygen and nutrients reaching the baby. Most mothers are more comfortable on the side anyway as they get bigger.

You can. In late pregnancy, lying on your left side helps avoid compression of your vena cava. Darla H. is absolutely right.

Sorry, I have never heard that one before. I just didn't sleep on my back because it was so darn uncomfortable.

because...the baby is resting on your spinal cord...puts pressure in areas that cause pain...plus if the baby is big enough the heart beat slows down...plus...its freaking pain ful sometimes.
