I don't believe that "Independent" is a party, at least in the Democrat/Republican sense. Independent voters, while united, can and should vote any way they feel is the best.

A Independent politician running for office doesn't necessarily have the support of Independent voters; it just means they are not affiliated with a certain political party.

There is no platform. It is basically for disenchanted Republicans or Democrats. Take McCain for example. He knew that he would never make it on the ballot as a presidential candidate for the Democrats, so he went independent this time so that he could run in 2008. He still affirms that he will vote Democrat, so nothing has changed.
