As players get more and more multi-skilled and the need to potentially do "everything" in a team becomes essential?

Hank again I agree with you on this question,as it seems as cricket in evolving at different level, players need the capacity to be multi skilled and are being groomed along these lines.

Gone are the days for a wicket keeper not being able to bat, bowlers need to be able to swing bat also...and batsmen being relatively good fill in bowlers,if needed...

The depth of the Aussie team being groomed brings this home all the time so maybe we are seeing a different mind set from selectors coaches etc..
I guess it is becoming like this due to the amount of cricket available all year round through out world so players are becoming more proficient at all levels....Cheers

No. In fact, I think the opposite is true..there are fewer and fewer genuine allrounders, players who are both very good batsmen and bowlers. Being a batsman who bowls adequately, like Kevin Pietersen, or a bowler who can bat a bit like Shane Warne is not the same as being a genuine all-rounder.

With so much more international cricket being played these days, players simply dont have the time to develop another skill to the level of being really good at it. So they stick with what they do best, and maybe practice tthe other skill a little to keep it reasonable. But that doesnt make them an all-rounder.

The problem with quality all-rounders is that the individual has to put in twice as much work as any other player. They have to work hard on their batting, their bowling and, of course, their fielding and fitness. This is why there are few great all-rounders in the game now, and even historically. Every team cries out for an all-rounder but the fact is there aren’t many really good ones about.

The reason I believe Shane Watson could be one of the world’s next superstars is that he not only has great skill but he also has a peerless work ethic. It wouldn’t surprise me to see him taking the international cricket world by storm in the next few years.

Hard to argue there I mean bowlers have to bat and field better now than they ever did in the past and batsmen have to be more skilled with the wider range of deliveries every bowler has
