On a street car, they're just for looks. On a race car you dump the factory latch to save weight so you need them to keep the hood closed.

In 2006 this is a great question.
First. Hood Pins are / were required to hold the hood down tight during a run down the drag strip.
In the 1960's you could remove your hood hinges. and the latching mechanism and reduce your un-sprung weight by approximately 25 pounds.
The hood is very neccessary for propr aerodynamics and cooling. So we must have a hood.
1. The hood pins made it easy for the mechanics to remove the hood and work on the car.
2. The hood pins reduced weight up front, where it is needed most.
3. And they also held a metal or glass hood down while scooting down the track.
Now you know why they were invented. Each car is different. You figure out why the builder really put the pins on the car.

I use them on race cars so I don't need the added weight of a hood latch and catch. Some aftermarket hoods do not have a place to attach the hardware so a pin is needed. The pins on new cars are just for show.

they hold your hood down, on the street you dont really need them, but if u got an old muscle car the look cool, they are alot more reliable at high speeds than an ordinary hood latch, in the 60s on cars like the plymouth road runner they had hood pins at all four corners of the hood because the fiberglass hood wouldve snapped with standard hinges and latches, yes you had to lift the whole hood off to acces the engine

Genuine race cars have fiberglass hoods that are held down with hood pins instead of a latch since they weigh so little. The weight savings translates into better performance.
Many street cars want to emulate the look of racing cars, thus they add hoodpins. Those are just for looks.
Heck, that's not the dumbest things. The dumbest thing I've seen... fake turbo dump valve sound generator. You know turbos makes this little whiny sound, then a gas release sound once the pressure builds up? This device imitates that sound on a non-turbo car. :P

The only time you would need them is if the original hood latch was removed, otherwise they are just for show.
Hope this helps

NHRA mandates them if your running a a car faster than 10.99 in the 1/4 mile. they are failsafes if they orginal hood latch fails, they basically keep the hood from meeting the windshield. if you have a honda, then you'll never need them, lol.

when I talked with regard to the hot nationwide motor vehicle I knew the writing became on the wall. all of us loves the seem to the nationwide motor vehicle in evaluation to the Cup motor vehicle. With the distinct the front ends and a large huge difference between makes except stickers it really is a step contained in the right route. the hot Mustangs and Challengers are reliable searching race vehicles and could do extra to assist revenues than the gruesome Cup vehicles. that can assist save the interest of the manufacturers contained in the game and save them putting earnings NASCAR. i do not assume them to do a finished remodel yet extra of an outward visual attraction tweaking and with the actual incontrovertible actuality that communities are understanding about it in develop can assist communities in fee even as the substitute is made and from dropping money unnecessarily on the present motor vehicle.
