Your parents are right when they're against (I guess for economic reason) since tennis is really expensive; further to learn tennis you need better to get private lessons (and this will cost you a fortune) otherwise it will take you really a longtime to start amusing (and also this will cost a lot to hire courts, rackets, buy balls,etc.etc,).- If you think it's possible to learn tennis thru some website forget it. Tennis is a very technical sport and even playing with a friend who plays tennis will not help you at all since teaching is really difficult and must be done in a professional way to get some result.

Harrison is absolutely right. Find someone to play with and practice, practice, practice. You do not need formal tennis lessons or to have started at an early age. that is why tennis is so great! basically anyone can play it recreationally. If you are in highschool (which i hope you are) check out your school's team/program. Most of them are free. I know i had to pay for mine but that is cause we had little funding and it was a small cost. The school should be able to help you out with it and waive the fee if you cannot afford it. Through the school team you get the free beginner coaching you would otherwise have to pay for. I played recreationally as a kid with my cousin and one day in my sophmore year i went out for the team with a 30 dollar racquet from meijer and made the Varsity team. Good Luck!

I asked this question a while back, and the answers I got varied. CONCLUSION: Table tennis doesn't help your tennis. Why? Because in tennis the court is at least 10 times as long and wide, meaning you have to smack the ball harder. WAY HARDER. And with the serve and everything, you can't compare the two sports together.

It's really hard to learn without a coach or a trainer..
Even if you practice with your friends who is not a pro.. sometimes it will not work bcoz ur friends cant teach you how to do a proper tennis,,
and if you cant do proper tennis, u can actually hurt urself..
What you can do is to watch someone practice, and try it, but becareful!!
U may also play against the wall when you already know how to hold the racket and your grip...
Good luck!!

Ok, the cheapest way to learn to play tennis is to find a friend who plays, and go to your local court together and play around. Ask them any questions, and also post here for additional help. A good site for advanced serves and twist shots is about.com, as there is a great semi-pro who posts tons of videos there.

For now, work on some basic forehand/backhand strokes with someone you know. I GUARANTEE that if you search the web for a basic forehand you will find loads of people with great advice.

Don't let anything stop you.

well... i go to the local club near my house and get lessons... BUT, the balls are supplied... etc... but yes... get a friend and go 2 your local park and play... you could ask your school to let you borrow some tennis balls... but either that or you can find/buy some balls... * i normally find tennis balls all over the place,, naighbours throw them over* but yes... tennis raquets are expensive but you could find a good second hand one on ebay... they;re not that expensive

actually i just started playing about 6 months ago, and kicked some butt during the city matches. and those girls had been playing since they were like 5. it just matters how much you want it
check out the USTA they have scholarships and clubs that feel sorry for the non-millionares
and totally go out for a school team if you have one, the try-outs will help start the basics and its free!

Get a racquet, get a ball, get a friend (with racquet), find a court, go play, have fun.
