I loved the original as a kid, but found the newer version to be quite dark. I think an older child (7-ish +?) would enjoy either, and not necessarily catch on to the darkness of the newer version.

Of course for the speial effects ,songs and so forth would appeal to a child and they'd be awed. The complex ideas that run within the movie are too deep to be picked up by children anyway .

The original was. It wasn't AS dark. The oompah lompah's gave kids moral advice. The new one is dark and only understood on an adult level. It was made for all us grown ups who loved the original. But, it wasn't as good as the first.

Nope...its so dark and twisted!! I love Johnny Depp but what the hell was he thinking with this movie! Stick to willy wonka and the choclate factory for the kiddies!
