Some things you should know:

1. Laptops have less powerful processors than desktop PC's. Therefore, if you want to play games that require a fast computer, you will need to shell out some extra $$ to get a speed you want. My laptop is 1.67 Mhz and is one year old. It handles Microsoft Office programs, etc. very well, but I like to play the Sims 2 on it and I experience some performance problems with this speed.

2. Memory is a big deal. Get a lot of it. Mine has 512 MB but I would suggest a minimum of 1 Gigabyte, especially with Vista coming out. It is recommended to get it in one memory slot instead of two for easier expansion of memory.

3. A new version of Windows, Windows Vista, is coming out early next year. Therefore, you may want to ask your dad for a raincheck and wait until it comes out to buy your laptop. Even though the laptops being sold right now come with a free voucher for Vista, they may not necessarily run it at optimal speeds. I've heard Vista is really cool so I would encourage that you get it.

4. If you're planning on moving your laptop around a lot, consider the weight. A 15.4" widescreen is a pretty standard screen size but can bulk up the weight to around 6 or 7 pounds. I lug mine around to classes and don't mind too much but if you think the weight is going to be an issue you may want to consider getting a smaller screen. Remember, a laptop screen is held much closer than a desktop screen, so bigger isn't necessarily better. I have a 15.4" and it's really nice, especially when watching movies.

I know there are more factors to consider but these are some that I think are most important.

I'd get a Macbook. They are loaded with good hardware, come with lots of useful free software that lets you manage your music and photos, and do not suffer from viruses and spyware like Windows computers do. They also come with built in wireless and Blue tooth, and remotes and other really cool features.

You can basically just use them and the do not get bogged down with garbage and crash. With Microsoft releasing a new operating system next year, there are going to be tons of bugs and security flaws to work out. Apple's operating system is very efficient and works very well.

Make sure you get the AppleCare extended warranty - laptops tend to suffer damage more than desktops.

Apple MacBook. They're great for portable entertainment, or just working at home! You can watch/burn movies and listen to music and view your photos. They're super-fast and lightweight. There's a built in webcam which takes incredible pictures and videos. You can record your music if you play an instrument.
And it even looks really cool!
