Betta's are 'bubble nest breeders'. They form a nest of bubbles on the surface in which the lay eggs.
Burying itself in the gravel & swimming on it's side are definately NOT normal behavior for this type of fish. Nor is swimming around like it's going crazy. This is not a healthy fish.
The first thing you need to do if you have other fish in the tank is to get this one out. This fish doesn't need a lot of water or filtration or food for that matter.
Put it in a small unheated vessel with about 1- 2 cups of the same water it is in. Make sure that he can't jump out but also that he has air space. Once he's been secluded or quarentined from other fish you can seek advice.
Without seeing him it's hard to tell what he's suffering from so you'll probably need to let an expert take a look at him.
If this is a new fish , bring him back to where you bought him.
If you've had him a while....well again it's hard to tell without seeing him.
In any case DON'T feed him. Betta's can go a few days without food. They require very little food.

Hope this helps.

purely the gravel. airborne dirt and dust will turn to airborne dirt and dust making th ewater unclean. Sand will a similar element. i will also make it so that you want your filter out to artwork extra to sparkling it. reckoning on what kind of fish you could also pick to guage using distinct colour gravel, and including better pebble for further pnd and creek fish.

sounds like your fish has external parasites. do a full water change and add betta zing to the water, 2 drops per quart or 8-10 drops per gallon. or any meds for tropical fish that treat parasites. he should be fine then.

I have never heard of a betta actually burying itself. When they move gravel around they are making a nest type breeding area.
It sounds like a healthy fish.

It sounds like the betta probably has a parasite or fungal infection. Try treating for these and then take it to your local "knowledgable" pet shop for help.

Your beta fish is just trying to get the bugs worked out so it can be a release fish.

probably sick. Fish have some air sack that helps them keep balanced.....it'll probably die. Good thing betas are cheap....you're probably going to need a new one soon.
