pentium(R) AND pentium(4) which wan is better?

No such thing as Pentium (R). You must be thinking of Pentium M, which is a low-power variant of Pentium 4.

A 1.6 GHz Pentium M is about a 2.4 GHz Pentium 4. So Pentium 4 3.8 Ghz will be quite a bit faster than 1.73 GHz Pentium M.

i beleive that the (M) models are made to use less battery power and more ecconomic for mobile use, so it comes down to if you need power or battery life, and if you need both which you need more, the 1.73 (M) will use less power, and proberly create less heat (not 100% sure though), and as such you will get longer battery life, if you require power, and wont be moving it, you would be better with a desktop but, if you need power, but also the abitlity to move around go for the 3.8 (P4)

but for everyday use (email, music, word, etc) the 1.73 (M) should be powerful enough

i have never heard of a "R" but since its in a laptop and only 1.73 im asuming its M that is unless it is a Core Duo Chip :)
