with the high cost of machine work and quality or lack of skilled rebuilders and machine operators, then labor to R&R (remove and replace) factor in replacing belts, hoses, motor mounts filters etc. I would suggest buying a GM new long block @$3000 or a GM rebuilt Longblock @$1800, let the dealer (GM) do the swap labor should be @ 12 hours or @$1500, so the entire job less tax should be about $3800 to be done with a warranty.
The next choice, not to be a smart alec, get a "pep boys" rebuilt motor @$900, take it and the car to a local college with an auto shop, will take about a month and will cost about $500 for labor, with NO warranty from pep boys or the school., decide if the car is worth it, then go from there. hope this helps

You really do not need an entire new engine, a short block with a full valve job should set you up quite nicely. Take a look at City Motor Supply on-line they are the premier engine builder in Texas. I have even met folks that felt the price/quality combination was worth having engines shipped to other parts of the country. The site will give you a barometer of what the parts will cost, the labor will differ some across the country. It can be expensive, however if the rolling chassis is in good shape it is cheaper than a new car

Easier in the long run would be to find an engine rebuild company. You could go with a shortblock, longblock, or total engine. That way it will be completely and professionally done and probably come with some sort of warranty.
If you really want to do it yourself, figuere 300-500 for master rebuild kit, 200-300 for bore job, 100-200 for head work. Its a big job and you gotta have the tools and a place to do it.

Your fastest and probably best bet would be a crated long block. Around 1,500 - 1,800 from a rebuilder or 2,500 or more from a dealer. Figure another 500 for the swap. Don't bother with a short block; your heads are probably shot and should be replaced as well.

Depends on what parts you want, how the car will be driven in the end, do you want stock???
Do you want something with balls, that's all in this question but is totally missing, GM has great crate engines, that will cost slightly to significantly more, another question is: who's doing the rebuild? you? a garage? a friend?
so this question needs alot more info put into it before one can respond accurately.

I would suggest picking up a GM crate motor. You'll get your money's worth as well as a good warranty through GM.
