Your radiator core probably is leaking, -anti freeze (ethelyne glycol type) smells sort of like "burnt sugar"! Remotely it is because of the radiator, -- since it is where the anti freeze is circulated to cool the engine (that makes it partly the engines fault too), --- if you really want to "stretch" the diagnosis! This would make both guy's diagnosis right!!
The "heater core" is just a miniature "radiator" that the heater motor blows air through to bring heat into the vehicle! Check very carefully to make sure the hoses aren't leaking right at the firewall where the heater lines go through, -- I have seen a couple that leaked outside, but made their way into the hearter box, --and the heater core was removed needlesly (not the easiest job in the world)!

Sounds like a bad heater core, try to have your coolant system pressure tested and go from there. Anti-freeze has a rather sweet smell and that is whats causing your delicious smell!!! another thing to look for is a wet floor board thats a definate sign for a bad heater core or hose to it!

Coolant has a sweet smell to it and would affect the heat in your car. Have a mechanic check for faulty gaskets, for a faulty radiator, and/or for a bad heater core. There could be an assortment of things happening.

you may have a leak at the heater core, lift the carpet on the passenger side under the dash and look for wetness or antifreeze, also your windows will be getting a slimy film if the core is leaking
