Just wondering if anyone in the same boat has experienced any type of discrimination either large or small, or been stared at by people in a not so polite way? If so, what was your response? Thanks all.

Prejudice sucks. Let's face it, we have all felt the sting of some type of prejudice (and unfortunately, also prejudiced others) - I know I have on both. Racial prejudice does have a particularly long and hurtful history, though. My wife and I aren't interracial, so I can't ever fully understand what your life is like, but we do have several friends who are, and have felt their pain.

Changing the cycle of hate is tough, though. Our natural reaction is to react in anger or violence. Unfortunately that just fuels the hateful and hurtful stereotypes.

Understand that you can't change them, you can only change yourself, and invite them to change. Some of it sounds hokey, but, to me, here's what you can do:

1. Try not to be bitter. Resentment is like drinking poison and waiting for the other person to die.

2. Keep reaching out to those who are diffent than you (that goes for all of us). The more we get to know each other, the sooner we'll realize that none of us has cultural or intellectual cooties.

3. Remember that changing actions takes a little time. Behaviors even more. But values and beliefs take a long time--often several generations. Fortunately in most of the world, the trend is going in the right direction. And let's face it, if you look at the history of man, it was only a relative minute ago that we were still in tribes and generations went by without anyone seeing anyone else that didn't look like themselves. It just takes our brains a bit to catch up to this new world.

4. Most importantly, remember that me, and millions of others, accept you, your wife, and your marriage--and love you for who you are!

Peace.

My wife is Black and from Panama, I'm white and from Norway. We have been married for 27 years, In that time I've seen and herd a lot of bad words. But the real hurt comes from the thing people do and said to my children as they grew up. We told them what was Right and wrong. And people are either good or bad. They both are very decent people and both in college with strong family values and ties to each side of there family.

Thanks for asking.

I think that you'll find that most people will tell you that they don't care what people say or think. They might get looks, but they are probably use to it. If you get stared at, just ignore it. Interracial relationships are so common now more than they ever were, I don't see how people can stare. People look so different with tattoos, piercings, different color hair, the way they dress...who cares what color skin you have?! Focus on what you're doing and not what people are thinking about or if they are looking at you. Good luck.

Nope, no discrimination experienced here. But then again, why do you care about what others are doing? Enjoy your relationship and forget those miserable fools! Seriously, who spends their time looking at interracial couples?
