That's a difficult question, only because my answer is a bit complicated. I started to really like the books after the fourth one, GoF. The first three were either written without much detail and feeling, or were just completely dull. I liked the first HP movie, probably because it followed the book's plotline pretty well. The other movies after, well, not so great.

The books have so much more in them. If you only see the movies you will miss a lot and not understand why some things happened. Rowling has such a great gift with symbolism and her humor is fantastic. It doesn't come through in the movies. Also the Dumbledore of the books is great and we all love him. The new Dumbledore in the movies is terrible and bears no resemblance to the REAL Dumbledore.

Take the last movie, Goblet of Fire. Dumbledore would never grab Harry and shake him and ask him if he put his name in the goblet. Dumbledore of the books is a kind and loving man, and somewhat all knowing. He also expects the best of everyone. He would have known that Harry did not put his name in, and he would never have shaken anyone, not even Lord Voldemort.

You have got to read the books!!!

Books.
They always have such detail and allows you to "visualize" the scene, getting your imagination flowing and your mind open.
Also, movies are shortened; they omit some of the best parts in the books, and you can only get to know the inner thoughts of the main character (Harry Potter) in the books, right?
And sometimes, those inner thoughts are what gives you the most information and insight on a novel......
If you love the harry potter movies, you should almost definetely read the books. They are spectacular :0)
hope this helps!

I love both the same, for the experiences are both fulfilling, in different ways. After reading the book, you kind of dream and wonder, it was so enthralling to await the film to be shown so you could kind of live through it. In those couple of hours you enjoy traveling visually with Harry Potter and friends and the villians as well. The make believe for a while is fun and magic is great on the screen it makes you want to read the next book and do it all over again.

I like the books there are so many details that are left out of the movies. I like to reread the books, I reread the series everytime a new book is published.
Also if you have not listen to the books on tape you are missing one of the best experences with the wonderful british actor who reads the books

The books. Books are always better than the movies. They give you a better understanding of the characters and the story. Plus the way I envision what the author is describing, might not be the same way some Hollywood director envisions it.
