Hong Kong was part of China but was 'leased' to the British till 1997. It was returned to PR of China on 1st July 1997, as an independant state - i.e. 1 country, 2 ruling styles.
Hong Kong is more democratic compared to PR of China.
Being exposed to Hong Kong dramas, movies and songs since i was a kid, I love Hong Kong. I've been to HK twice and i plan to go again in the near or far future.

Hong Kong used to be a British colony till 1999, and therefore their infrastructure benefited from all that "The West" had to offer. However China as we all know is a communist nation so freedom of speech or any freedoms Hong Kong enjoyed it was unheard off. That's one of the differences between the two nations.

Where are you from?
Hong Kong is officially part of China now, before it was a British colony. That body of China excluding HK and Macao is called Mainland China. Most of the things remain pretty much the same as in the British ruled era, the laws of HK is still different from Mainland China. But HK is becoming increasingly influenced by Mainland China in the culture and economic areas. HK people's English is decling.
